Blood drive, card report and local events in Del Rio

Del Rio hosts a blood drive at the Civic Center on Thursday Oct 15 from noon to 7 pm. Donors 18 to 66, weigh at least 110 pounds, and eight weeks since last donation are welcome. 415 units used at Val Verde Hospital this year, expected to top 500. Also reports card distributions, AARP meeting, Columbus Day holiday for the Del Rio Mental Clinic, period costumes needed, Turkey Walk for American Heart Association, and various club meetings and hostesses in Del Rio.

Houston man shot himself at hunting camp in Val Verde

A 32-year-old Houston visitor, Carl Clifford Scarborough, was at the A O Baker Ranch with a party of three when the .30 caliber pistol he was handling discharged. The round shattered a leg bone, and he was airlifted from Val Verde Memorial Hospital to a Houston hospital after initial treatment.

Gold Star award winners at 4-H Club dinner

Three girls won Gold Star awards at the 4-H Club dinner in Memorial School Cafeteria: Clay Whitehead Melissa Harris and Bonnie Lou Mayer. Rex Stultz presented the awards after Karen Knopp and county extension staff. Also honored were Coca Cola as Friend of 4-H Russ White as outstanding leader and Thomas Rose for 20 years coaching the Senior 4-H Rifle Team Ellyn Rose was 4-H Sweetheart.

Burglars hit warehouse at Marin Construction Co

Police investigated a weekend string of crime at Marin Construction Co. 4214 U S Highway 90 West reporting a break in between 5 30 p m Friday and 1 p m Saturday. Items taken valued over 1200 included two speakers two telephones a rifle two pistols two tape players two tool boxes a chain saw a router and more.

Hunters to flock to Del Rio area for season

John K. Finegan of the Dolan Creek Ranch told the Del Rio Hotel/Motel Association that about 500 hunters are expected in the Del Rio area this hunting season. He oversees hunting leases at his ranch. The group met in the Del Rio Bank and Trust Co Directors' Room and next month’s meeting will be hosted by Best Western La Siesta. Death Notice for Manuela M. Sanchez at 75

Mrs. Manuela M. Sanchez, 75, died Friday in a local hospital. She lived at 300 Arteaga St. Rites Monday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church with burial in San Felipe Cemetery. Born May 29, 1906, in Mexico. Survivors include son Juan Sanchez of Laredo and daughters Mary Casillas, Conchita Sanchez, Hilda Linden and others, plus grandchildren and a great grandchild. Funeral arranged by Don's Funeral Chapels.

Del Rio sees a 20 percent chance of thundershowers this afternoon and Sunday afternoon as the National Weather Service predicts extensive morning fog and cloudy skies, then partial clearing. Lows in the low 70s and highs in the upper 80s with southeast winds 1 to 15 mph, gusty near storms. Saturday high 91, low 67. normals 85/62 and all time highs 96 in 1962, low 42 in 1909.

Amistad elevation recorded at 1118.19 feet with water depth of 218.19 feet. Storage reached 3,583,354 acre feet and surface area 65,863 acres. Downstream discharge measured 1,650 cubic feet per second.
