The Del Rio News-Herald notes that most offices including city county and federal facilities are closed Monday for Columbus Day with corrections: all public schools remain open per the San Felipe Del Rio CISD calendar. Walmart branches open and IBC banks operate as usual.
The City of Del Rio Val Verde County Laughlin Air Force Base and local Veterans groups will hold Veterans Day events at 11 a.m. on November 11 at the Del Rio Civic Center in front of the monument bearing names of local veterans who died in World War I World War II Korea Vietnam and Iraq Afghanistan. A full program will follow later with a public invitation extended.
A fire in a bedroom at 710 West Cantu Road displaced a family of four Saturday afternoon. Kimberly Martinez and her three young children were home when the blaze started near an electrical outlet and spread to a bed, damaging the ground-floor condo they rented as firefighters retrieved charred belongings. Xavier, Martinez’s 5-year-old son, pleaded with responders as the scene unfolded.
Del Rio police investigate a Thursday afternoon crash as a pickup truck struck a house, causing more than $30,000 in damages. Lt. Apolonio Hernandez and Sgt. Paul Hurley led the response near Avenue U around 4 p.m. Residents reported the incident and officers began the preliminary report.

Five members of the Texas Mexican Mafia were sentenced in Del Rio federal court after pleading guilty to conspiracy to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corruption Organization Act. Investigators linked the gang to two killings as they extended activity from prisons into extortion narcotics trafficking and violent crime along the Texas border.
