A 10-foot-deep sinkhole opened on I-4 during morning rush, creating a five mile traffic backup. A second sinkhole and a separate crash later closed eastbound lanes near downtown Orlando. No injuries reported and no car damage noted.
The school district unanimously approves a one year waiver allowing Del Rio High School to field a 20 person cheerleading squad instead of 16 after a scoring error led to elite varsity selections. Principal Hector Montilvo says tryouts peaked May 10 with an asterisk misplacement discovered May 14.
Congressman Henry Bonilla announced a Community Oriented Policing Services grant totaling more than 872 thousand dollars to hire seven new sheriff deputies. The deputies will serve at San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District campuses, teaching students about crime prevention and handling domestic and sexual violence issues. The award aligns with post 9/11 safety priorities as Bonilla praised Sheriff Jernigan and Lauded local political gains toward a two party system in Val Verde County.
At Amistad nearby Del Rio Texas a survey during low lake levels uncovered about 1500 acres of shoreline yielding more than 100 ancient campsites and historic remains of a Devils River resort community before Amistad Dam. A five member crew from WACC Tucson spent five weeks in April and May documenting sites.
