Body found in Del Rio identified as Mario Pefia
Del Rio police on Wednesday identified a man found dead Sunday evening in a brushy east-side vacant lot as 40 year old Mario Pefia of San Angelo. Investigators say no wounds or signs of a struggle were found and toxicology will reveal if drugs or alcohol were involved. A white Ford pickup linked to Pefia’s father was seen entering and leaving Mexico twice that weekend.

Taxpayers to get advance child tax credit this summer
The Treasury and IRS announce an advance payment of up to 400 per qualifying child for 2003 from the 2002 credit. About 25 million checks will go out with notices on July 23, 30 and Aug. 6, then cash the checks. No action by taxpayers is required beyond cashing the check.

Del Rio Cadet James Long Jr. Commissioned at U S Air Force Academy
James Stillman Long II, a 1994 Del Rio High School graduate, was commissioned as a second lieutenant after graduating from the U S Air Force Academy on a Wednesday. He will report to Laughlin AFB for pilot training this summer, part of a family flying legacy stretching back to his grandfather in the 1930s. Congressman Henry Bonilla aided Del Rio natives in obtaining service academy appointments, including Norman Rangel Christie, who graduates and joins the U S Army armor branch at Ft Polk La.
