Cardwell received a Rotary honor recognizing dedicated volunteers. The ceremony celebrated community service with remarks from leaders and gratitude to those whose efforts supported club projects and local programs.
Del Rio Sector conducts a week long operation from May 12 to 18 with extra staff and a goal to seal the border. Officials say zero getaways by May 17 and totals of 601 apprehensions over seven days, compared with 543 in the same period in 1999. Sign cutters and civilian reports estimate 90 to 95 percent accuracy in tracking crossings.
Del Rio census efforts gain momentum as ads encourage residents to open doors to workers. Henry Gomez of the Full Count Committee reports rising public cooperation in June with workers visiting homes to collect name address and cross streets. Final tally aims for President Clinton by December.
In Eunice Louisiana a Union Pacific freight train derailed with 113 cars, several carrying hazardous acrylic acid and other chemicals. Fire and heat risk prompted explosive pressure relief while about 2000 residents were evacuated within two miles. air readings were not hazardous and cleanup awaited safety clearance.
In Queens, John Taylor and Craig Godineaux faced arraignment on multiple counts including first and second degree murder after seven employees were shot and five killed during a Wendy's robbery. Prosecutors described tying victims in a freezer box and ordering them to kneel before executions.
One of three people involved in a one vehicle rollover eight miles west of Langtry was released from University Hospital in San Antonio. Jesus Urby, 21, is staying with relatives in San Antonio and recovering from multiple lacerations. His mother Heriberto Urby’s ex-wife Carlota Alma Urby remains in critical condition with internal injuries after surgery to save her leg. Cecilia Celaya of Tabasco, Mexico, 60, the aunt of Carlota Alma Rivera Urby, was killed in the crash. Jesus’s siblings Manuel and Jorge Urby are Del Rio High School seniors who will receive diplomas when they return home.
In Houston, a 28 year old man suspected in the fatal shooting of an Austin parks officer died by suicide after a 15 minute police chase. He knelt and shot himself in the mouth as he entered northbound traffic near the Sam Houston Parkway. The Austin officer, shot at Zilker Park, later died. A second suspect was surrounded at a south Austin mobile home park. A Katy officer later flagged a vehicle matching the description.
