Mayoral recount unlikely as Garza may be ineligible
City Secretary Jayne Douglas said no petition from mayoral candidate Robert Garza meets legal grounds for a recount after the election showing Dora Alcala with 2 149 votes to Garza 1 157. She noted Garza could pursue a court order though irregularities in mail in ballots are being explored by his camp.

New principals named for Garfield and Lamar Elementary
Two district employees were named elementary school principals for 2004 2005 in San Felipe Del Rio CISD. Roberta Janet Runyan will lead Garfield Elementary and Maria G Jennie Owens will head Lamar Elementary, replacing retiring principals. Owens moves from Buena Vista Elementary. Runyan replaces Rodolfo Jimenez. Board votes approved the selections 5 2 and 6 1 respectively.

Senate Rejects Delay to Domestic Base Closings
The Senate narrowly rejected a bid by Trent Lott and Byron Dorgan to delay the next round of domestic base closings until Pentagon decides overseas plans. The 49 to 47 vote favored the Pentagon which opposes any delay. House to consider two-year delay. White House threatened veto.
