A state district jury found Dora Villarreal not guilty after about two hours of deliberation in a 1998 incident in which a vehicle allegedly struck a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old. The 63rd Judicial District Attorney, Tom Lee, announced the outcome.
The 63rd Judicial District Narcotics Task Force reports three additional arrests in a cocaine selling operation. Monique Sinclair, 22, Val Verde Fairgrounds Suite A, and Rogelio Gomez Santos, 31, 529 Gregory, each face two counts of delivery of cocaine. Virgilio Del Valle, 45, 1207 Gillis, charged with one count. The roundup began May 9 with 26 arrests and more are pending.
A 52 member committee that helped pass the 29.4 million bond for Del Rio schools vows to oversee progress. Tony Ortega notes ongoing board and administration contact while the state covers 81.67 percent. June 15 is deadline to apply for funds. Voters backed the measure 3 to 1 on May 6 as the district plans a new junior high and renovations.

Citizens ranked criteria on alignment choices including costs environmental impact neighborhood effects economic development and safety as the study gauges feasible highway improvements across four states.
Jefferson County grand jury indicts Thomas Blanton Jr., longtime suspect in the 1963 Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing. Blanton is jailed with no bond sought. fellow suspect Bobby Cherry remains free on bond amid separate molestation charges.
U S Border Patrol agents from Eagle Pass seized more than 300000 in marijuana and arrested six suspected drug traffickers in five separate incidents. On May 6 near the Rio Grande six miles west of Eagle Pass officers recovered 117.4 pounds valued at 93920 from three men and later found 114.6 pounds worth 91680 in another area aided by a canine unit. On May 9, agents near the port of entry found five duffel bags along the Rio Grande east of the border as a narcotics canine alerted to the scene.
Del Rio shoppers find cheaper gas at three stations on Ave F at La Casita, U S 90 West at Sonny's Self Serve, and Laughlin Air Force Base with prices around 1.45 to 1.46 per gallon. Local averages place lowest grade at 1.479 and overall at 1.579, while H E B in town charges 1.47 and nine tenths. Call 775-1551 ext 225 with better prices.
Retailers say price bumps reflect OPEC production increases and higher rack costs for Del Rio stations. Anthony Rusenberg er of Pico Petroleum cites OPEC as controlling crude cost, while Kusenberger notes transport, insurance, and freight add to fuel pricing. H E B cites summer demand and holiday travel, touting a Fuel Rewards program as a potential saver.
