Del Rio police seek a white male about 40 in a red truck with gray rims who assaulted a 22 year old woman near Canal Street around 6 p.m. on Sunday. He wore a white shirt with black pants and boots and fled after threatening her with a knife. Call Del Rio Crime Stoppers at 768-A-TIP with any information.
Police arrested David Cardenas, 29, of 402 Rosita, on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge after Manuel Cardenas was stabbed in the left lower abdomen at about 10 27 p m during a fight at 402 Rosita. Val Verde EMS dispatched but Manuel declined medical attention.
Pomona California detectives Bobby Nelson Hector Rodriguez and Don Sevesind along with Don’s brother Dale Sevesind—police officers—pedal coast to coast to boost public awareness of school violence drugs and gangs. The four stopped in Del Rio after 1400 miles of a 3000 mile cross country trip aimed at portraying a positive police image and supporting youth education.
A notice directs readers who missed their paper to call 775-1551 during set hours Monday through Friday 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for assistance or re-delivery.
Organizers anchored by the Texas Department of Human Services and Sul Ross State University hosted a full day job fair at the Del Rio Civic Center. More than 100 employers and 655 job seekers filled booths classrooms and interview rooms with firms from across Texas including Austin Dallas Lubbock and the Valley. Local law enforcement schools and Sacred Heart Catholic participated while maquiladoras did not respond. Preparation classes on resume writing networking and starting a business aided students while U S Customs offered recruitment guidance. City of Del Rio sponsored the event and provided the venue free of charge.
An early evening tornado cut a mile long path along the western lake shore damaging about 30 homes near Lake Whitney. R.G. Giles died at his Murts Lodge home while Velma Horton remained hospitalized in Dallas after injuries from the same storm. Giles’ body was found near his wrecked house as Horton was flown to Parkland Health. Funeral services for Giles were planned.
Federal charges accuse Gary Paul Karr, 52, of conspiring to kidnap and extort money from Atheist Mada Lyn Murray O Haire, her son Jon Murray, and granddaughter Robin Murray O Haire after the coins vanished five years earlier. Prosecutors say a plot led to murder and dismemberment, though no bodies were found. Jury selection starts at 9 a.m. with opening arguments to follow before Judge Sam Sparks.
