A rapid blaze in Angeles National Forest, about 50 miles north of Los Angeles, grew from 50 to 230 acres in two hours and burned over 1,000 acres, prompting evacuation warnings as 400 firefighters, five helicopters and seven planes battled the flames and one small building was destroyed.
Val Verde County Sheriff's Office marks National Peace Officer Memorial Day with an open house and jail tours for adults, blue ribbons for visitors, and displays honoring five deputies who died in the line of duty. Sheriff Jemigan cites community remembrance and sacrifice, while staff estimate variable public turnout for Del Rio event.
Wal-Mart opens its 24 hour Del Rio Supercenter on Wednesday morning marking the 20th anniversary of the original Del Rio store. Store manager Carlos Sanchez says the full line grocery store and numerous services including a salon bank optometrist and photo center will be available under one roof. The gas station beside the Avenue F entrance is leased to an outside firm while Walmart maintains everyday low prices.
Mexican Gov. Patricio Martinez of Chihuahua accused Gov. Rick Perry of political posturing over the U.S. Mexico water treaty dispute. He argued Chihuahua has fulfilled treaty obligations despite drought, while Texas faces water pressures. Mexico says it is making debt repayments. U.S. officials say Mexico owes 1.4 million acre feet. Martinez urged Americans to consider drought and irrigation issues in Texas.
