Two groups in Val Verde Park Estates set meetings this week to discuss water costs and annexation. The Val Verde Park Estates Colony led by Mrs Dora Chairez seeks city annexation while a rival group led by Mrs Margaret Humphries, claiming 78 signatures, opposes it. The Colony will meet Tuesday evening at Knights of Columbus Hall to petition the city and Utilities Commission, while Humphries invites officials including Sheriff Koog and Commissioner Wardlaw to a separate public discussion. She notes her family owns 18 lots and is connected to developer Edward T. Dicker of Dallas who once controlled the land. The dispute centers on water supply and whether annexation is needed.
Convicted Soviet spy Robert Thompson was exchanged today for American student Alan Van Norman in a three way prisoner swap. Thompson, 43, arrived in Berlin after detention in the United States and East Germany, reuniting with his mother after Van Norman, 22, left Windom, Minnesota, to meet him. Thompson, formerly a U.S. Air Force clerk, served 13 years of a 30 year term for passing secrets to the Russians. He spoke of the exchange as a serious business and said his life would change but he was glad to be free. He claimed his real name remains unknown and noted his plans to live in East Berlin with his son, an electrical engineer.
