The Mignorette Garden Club extends the order deadline to April 1 for tree spraying. Residents must mail orders with name address tree count and $1 per spray to General Delivery Del Rio.
A thunderstorm moved through Del Rio around 8 p.m. bringing up to three-quarters of an inch of rain in parts of the city and Laughlin Air Force Base. Light drizzle fell Friday night and Saturday morning with .04 inch reported in 24 hours. The National Weather Service forecasts partly cloudy skies Sunday and Monday with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and mild nights.
Police report Friday night vandalism caused an estimated 550 dollars in damage to at least three cars including a deputy sheriff patrol car. Multiple condemnations of ink on autos, thefts, and other incidents were under investigation with several victims named and locations cited.
Firefighters responded to a general alarm Saturday for a Del Rio business fire at Discount Auto Parts on Las Varas Street. On arrival, the blaze was smaller than feared, burning part of the roof and a sign owned by Pete Nualze of Uvalde and leased by Fernando Gonzalez of Del Rio.
City Police Chief James K. Riggs publicly recognized six Patrolmen four detectives and a juvenile officer for their crime fighting efforts since January. Detective Sgt Ramiro Castillo received praise for his role in the Marion Russell murder case. Patrolmen Donald Weaver James White Jeff Francis George McFarlen Robert Reyes and John Smith were cited for investigations leading to two or more arrests. Juvenile Division officer Lt Gustavo Cuellar was honored for work with students in the San Felipe Pel Rio Consolidated Independent School District.
Del Rio Mayor Herb Whitis will testify Monday before the Public Utilities Commission against General Telephone Company's requested 23 percent local rate increase yielding about 44.6 million more dollars for GTE Southwest. He will be joined by City Attorney Humberto Garcia and carry a council resolution from February 10 opposing the rise along with 11K citizen questionnaire results showing 56.8 percent rated service poor. Evidence from the hearing will be used at the PUC's April 27 session. James M. Simmonds will be sworn in Wednesday as head of the new Val Verde County Court of Law, while remaining judge of the city corporation court, with a reception to follow.
Graveside rites for 82 year old Bill Walk will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Masonic Cemetery. Walk, a Del Rican native, was found dead in his Los Angeles home Wednesday. Survivors include brother Sam Walk of Spring Texas, sister Mary Elizabeth Von Rosenberg of Canos Texas, a niece and two nephews.
