Private economists back accelerated tax relief aiming to boost spending power this year through a $300 rebate and changes in withholding. The plan, debated on Capitol Hill, seeks to inject dollars into a sluggish economy amid broader fiscal proposals.
The Port Lavaca school board voted 6 to 1 to hire Dr. Gloria Gonzalez as director for human services, replacing Ann Ozuna. Lopez cited her broad administrative background in bilingual education, counseling, special ed, Title I and related programs from Victoria, Calhoun and other posts, noting aims to build a comprehensive HR plan and strong district leadership.
Del Rio police on Tuesday arrested four individuals for marijuana possession within 1,000 feet of Sam Houston School after a routine check on an illegally parked car led to a drug dog alert. Arrested were Luis Faz 53 Homero Flores Romero 45 Hector Rodriguez Martinez 33 and Luis Arturo Sarabia 24.
District Attorney Fred Hernandez reports that the 63rd Judicial District grand jury on March 5 indicted multiple defendants for drug offenses and related crimes. Names include George Berreles, Orville Calvillo, Manuel Cerda, Julio Chacon, Noe Candiola, Michael De La Pesia, Hervey Fernandez Jr., Victor Garcia, Jose Garcia Jr., Gregorio Jalomes, Jay Jeffery Johnson Jr., Kenneth Kaeser, Ramiro Lomas, Antonio Maldonado, Terry Perry, Jose Luis Porras Jr., and Elliana Ramirez with charges ranging from possession of heroin cocaine marijuana and steroids to unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and forgery. Del Rio’s Complete Count Committee led by chair Al Cervantes questioned the unofficial Census 2000 count of 33,867 for the city. He noted CCC spent 10,175.95 dollars on promotion versus the 50,000 planned, thanking council, staff, educators, and local media for support. The county tally stood at 44,865, prompting debate over the city’s lower figure.
U S Customs inspectors at Del Rio Port of Entry have carried out multiple seizures and arrests. Four notable cases yielded 50 7 pounds seized from a lone driver, 54 7 pounds from Eloisa Tovias Guillen with an infant, 29 5 pounds from Alejandro Lopez, and 69 3 pounds from James Callahan. In each case the marijuana was hidden in vehicle components and multiple suspects were arrested or held for court proceedings.
