The 200 Spring Cleaning Campaign starts Monday April 3 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. City crews begin in Section 1 and county crews in Section 20. Trash goes in front of properties and alleys. Excluded items include wet paint batteries and hazardous materials. Call Streets and Drainage Refuse at 830 774 8632 with concerns.
Tonight at 6 30 p m the City Council discusses Fourth of July events Earth Day 2000 and Spring Cleanup plus resolutions on park acquisitions advertising for equipment and rolling stock lease financing and emergency warning systems land donations and water fluoridation projects Also on tap are annexation discussions financial reports executive session items pending litigation and land sale or lease The meeting is in council chambers 109 W Broadway and the public is invited.
Del Rio sees falling gasoline prices with the cheapest unleaded at 1.50 a gallon on Monday, down two cents from March 14 but one cent higher than March 5. A survey of 28 stations shows more outlets at the low end and the same count at the high end, with 1.53 cited as the peak price.
A government trapper James Pfeil and private pilot Quintin Vanclere died when a Hughes 300 crashed on Ray Hutto Ranch about 7:45 am Monday. Pfeil, 47, of Del Rio, and Vanclere, 28, of Uvalde, were on a Texas Wildlife Damage Management Service assignment. NTSB will investigate. Pfeil moved to Del Rio from Uvalde and is survived by his wife Becky Pfeil. Services are set for March 30.
A mock accident will be staged in front of Del Rio High School on Thursday morning with about 23 community agencies. Memorial Drive will be closed as ambulances police and firefighters respond. About 2,000 Del Rio students will witness the staged crash to stress that drinking and driving shatters lives.
Federal OSHA inspectors join Phillips Petroleum officials to investigate a Houston Ship Channel plant explosion that killed one worker and hospitalized 71 others. Most injuries are non life threatening. four remain critical. The blast, the third in 11 years, struck the K-resin plastics unit. An earlier June explosion killed two and injured four. OSHA fined the company $204,000 for 13 violations.
Del Rio High School Carnegie Singers 2000 will perform Mozart Requiem in Carnegie Hall Easter Sunday under conductor John Rutter. Thirty singers from Del Rio Brackettville Uvalde and music club members raised 35000 dollars. 1277 per traveler with 400 due soon. Val Verde Friends of the Arts donated 1000 dollars in memory of Jack Dengler as the group funds travel.
