Sacramento AP reports the state’s top energy regulator will seek rate hikes starting in May to curb power use. Large commercial and residential customers face the biggest increases, said Loretta Lynch of the California Public Utilities Commission in an LA Times interview.
The trial of 75 year old Brackettville rancher Samuel Blackwood, charged with deadly conduct in the May 13 fatal shooting of Eusebio de Haro, was postponed amid illness of the state DA and ongoing legal actions. Jury selection had been set in Kinney County Brackettville with over 120 jurors summoned. De Haro and companion Javier Sanchez, both tied to immigration status, were involved as the case faced a possible 10 year maximum if found guilty and a separate $15 million wrongful death suit by de Haro's parents.

In a SWTJC Del Rio Center biology series installment, deserts and near deserts rival wildflowers this spring. Paul Banks notes plant blends from the Chihuahuan Desert Edwards Plateau and Tamaulipan Thorn Scrub with cactus varieties along a new nature trail behind the college. Species include Opuntia lindheimeri, Opuntia violacea, Echinocactus texensis and Yucca torreyi, with Texas Mountain Laurel Sophora secundiflora in bloom.
Del Rio Fire and Rescue unveils a formal medal program started by Chief Jack Collier in 1996, continued by Chief Harold Bean. The program honors extraordinary acts with four medals, including the Medal of Valor and the Medal of Merit, awarded for lifesaving and other achievements. Lt. Alfonso Zertuche and Daniel Young were the first recipients for rescuing two people from a flooded river.
