Motorists are warned a flag man will stand at the Bedell Avenue and Cantu Road corner during reservoir and pump station work. The three week construction began last Thursday and is expected to affect traffic nearby.
Deputy Chief John Sheedy said the city landfill fire is basically extinguished and contained with a 24 hour watch by TNRCC. Ground cooling improves with rain, crews survey the area with a thermal camera, and soil is kept moist to prevent toxin release. A TxDOT TIP public meeting is set in Del Rio at 6 p.m. today. Bill Blagg to step down as U.S. attorney for Western District of Texas this April ending a five year tenure.
Val Verde County Commissioners Court extended the Bonnets eviction to April 16 after meeting in closed session. The house at 208 West Third Street remains in county ownership since a sheriff's deed in 1997. The nine year legal dispute began with a 1992 land subdivision suit and ended with a 1997 fraudulent transfer finding.
Del Rio Fire and Rescue extinguished a boat fire around 10 p.m. Monday at the corner of Meandering Way and Maverick Trail. Owner Carlos Paredes says the blaze started at the rear and spread quickly. investigators are pursuing the cause.
The San Felipe Del Rio CISD board meets at 7 p.m. Thursday in the district office board room to discuss naming a new human resources director. The agenda includes public comment, project updates from Ferrell & Brown Associates and Saldana and Associates on the new middle school, bilingual program overview, closed session items, consent agenda actions, and minutes and budget-related approvals for February 2001.
The Street Beat Music Festival returns for a third year in Del Rio in the Wal-Mart lot on Saturday March 24, from noon to past 10 p.m. The free all day event features Texas artists from Dallas Fort Worth San Antonio Victoria and San Angelo with genres Tejano Latino salsa country pop rock and rap. Food booths offer brisket tacos fajita tacos grilled corn watermelon nachos and more. Bleacher seating and some chairs are provided but attendees should bring lawn chairs. City of Del Rio Recreation Department and promoters sponsor the event to promote positive music for families.
Training exercises inform, train, and retrain Del Rio Fire and Rescue personnel. Lt. Jimmy Crane leads two hour sessions per shift with One Man Rescue to teach rescuing an unconscious person from upper stories. The sequence starts with the heel man securing the ladder, then the rescuer locks in to work with both hands.
