Val Verde County reports high turnout in the Democratic and Republican primaries with 3,345 total votes cast during early voting and election day set for Tuesday March 14 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters choose candidates for the 63rd Judicial District and District Attorney, plus the 68th Judicial District race.
Texas officials announced grants totaling over 30 million to more than 250 cities and counties including Del Rio which will receive 49830 to aid crime reduction public safety and enforcement efforts BJA funds support drug courts officer hires overtime school security and multi jurisdiction task forces with allocations also going to Eagle Pass and Maverick County.
The Census Bureau begins mailing 98 million census forms as part of Teach Census Week led by director Kenneth Prewitt. The aim is to fix undercount issues from 1990 by encouraging counting every child and household member through school lessons. Over 1.5 million teacher kits and take-home exercises are distributed to support participation nationwide.
Census 2000 will mail short forms to seven questions to about 2000 million homes and long forms with 52 questions to a sampled 15 million households. Rural addresses will receive forms by hand. The public is warned about deceptive mailings and the package bears the Commerce Department return address and Census 2000 logo.
