Alien smuggler jailed awaiting transfer to federal prison
Leonel Garcia Almazan, 30, was arrested by Border Patrol five miles east of Del Rio after loading 29 aliens onto a one ton truck. He pleaded guilty to four counts of smuggling aliens and was sentenced to four consecutive 178 day terms. Deportation will follow after serving the sentence.

Stroman chosen as Corporation Court Judge in Del Rio
City Council selected William J. Stroman from three applicants to fill the vacant Corporation Court post left earlier this month by James Simmonds, now Val Verde County Court-at-Law judge. Other contenders were Nick Duncan and John C. Hampton. Stroman, a Texas Tech Law graduate of 1975, has prior experience as assistant district attorney in San Angelo and private practice in Del Rio. He thanked the council, pledging fair administration of justice.

Houston man linked to smuggling 29 aliens near Rio Grande
Border Patrol says a Houston man collected payment from aliens smuggled into the United States. The group camped near the Rio Grande before crossing, then loaded onto a truck. After a stop on US Highway 90 at about 5:30 a.m., the aliens were handed to Mexican immigration officials.

Conviction Upheld in Val Verde Burglary Case
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals refused to overturn the burglary conviction of David Peres Wad, Val Verde County man. Judge George M. Thurmond of the 8th District Court sentenced him to five years in prison. The appeals court ruled Flores indictment was not defective.

One of three suspects in the Saturday morning rape of a 24 year old Del Rio woman stayed in Val Verde County Jail on a 10000 dollar bond. John Weeks 20 arrested Saturday night at Laughlin Air Force Base connected to the 3 30 a m rape in the cliffs area of Lake Amistad. Charles Nason 19 posted bond Tuesday after arrest Saturday night by Bill Barnes and the Val Verde County Sheriff's Department. William Plate 20 made bond Monday after custody at the base Sunday morning.
