25 Boys Begin Camp Out Monday

Mauroe Paz acting director at the Community Action Agency said about 25 boys are now in a four week camp-out for low income families at San Pedro Canyon on Amistad Lake. 15 children left with adult leaders Monday afternoon. weather may have kept more from going out. Participants will learn water safety and outdoor skills in a primitive camp setup with tents and a kitchen area. total expected reach is about 100 boys. Pedro De Hoyos and Robert Gazaille lead this week, seeking more adults to supervise.

The Indian Claims Commission ruled that the Navajo Nation occupied about 3 million more acres than the 1865 treaty boundary, potentially triggering a large settlement based on 1868 land values. Felipe Escobar Rites Pending

Felipe Escobar, 57, died Monday in a local hospital likely of a heart attack after arriving there. Rites are pending at Don's Funeral Chapel. He lived at 310 Arista St. Born May 26, 1913 in the city, he worked at a local restaurant. Burial is planned at Oak Lawn Memorial Park. Survivors include his widow Alta Gracia Escobar of Plainview, a son Felipe Sr., daughters Manuelita and Geneveva Escobar, brother Pedro Escobar of Bakersfield, Calif., and sisters Celestina Esquivel of Del Rio and Lydia Zuniga of Dallas.

Taxpayers Group Presses Officials On Tax Assessments

Representatives of a taxpayers group met with Del Rio Independent School District officials and city leaders after a morning public meeting at Travelodge Motel. Don RB was named steering committee chair to pursue possible negotiations on property tax assessments for the school district and the city, with a subcommittee and reports planned for a forthcoming general session.

Vocational Nurse Class Scheduled

A new vocational nurse class will start August 31 with 15 student accommodations. Instructor Mrs. Lona Latham announced applications are available at the Del Rio Independent School District business office. Thirty forms are offered on a first come, first served basis, due by July 10, requiring two years of high school or equivalent, American citizenship or naturalization progress, and admission in a 12 month program leading to state examinations for licensure.
