City officials in Del Rio unveil a broad special projects package funded by CETA and Manpower to repair substandard private housing at public expense. The plan, approved in a special session, includes school auditorium renovations and park improvements, with over 327000 expected and about 40 workers to be hired.
Bea Brown hosts guests from San Antonio for Fourth of July plans in San Antonio. The group will hold a barbecue at Normandy Apartments and visit Rio Ywande Valley overnight. TOPS social and weight check occur in Del Rio with a plan to visit Whatleys home. OFFICERS to be elected at American Legion Post 595. Amistad Rookie League awards tonight at Buena Vista Park. Volunteer drive July 11 to 22 for Mental Retardation Services offers arts craft and field trips. Three free films shown at Val Verde Library. Joe Castro injured while mowing, treated locally and moved to hospital. Preschool story hour set at Val Verde Library. Paul Kallinger reports his truck theft thwarted by police.

Heat continues to dominate as the NWS forecasts sunny hot conditions today and Wednesday. Tonight’s low in the low 70s and Wednesday's high in the mid-90s. Southeast winds 10 to 18 mph. Monday reached 97 degrees with a 72 degree low. A cooler trend is hinted Thursday to Saturday with scattered storms mainly east of the mountains in West Texas.
The Del Rio City Council and Val Verde County Commissioners Court approved a joint operation and maintenance agreement with the Soil Conservation Service for a San Felipe Creek flood control structure. The council voted unanimously. the commissioners split 3 to 2 with Judge Gonzalez breaking the tie for approval.
Del Rio City Manager James Hester warns unpaid Crystal City gas bill could trigger wider fallout for La Vaca Gathering Co. and Coastal States, risking over 1.6 billion in out of court settlements and potential service terminations for Del Rio, Carrizo Springs, and Uvalde. Mayor Benavides cites poverty as a barrier to payment while the Texas Supreme Court weighs Crystal City's appeal.
An 18 year old Del Rio cook was charged with burglary of a vehicle after being found inside a pickup truck outside a furniture store. Joe Anthony Custer of 201 Ave B was arrested about 3 am by Patrolman William Barnes and remanded to Val Verde County Jail on a 3500 bond. Detectives noted the suspect appeared to search for money but nothing was taken.
The Del Rio-Val Verde Health Department clinic runs 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at 200 Bridge St. with emphasis on polio vaccines due to a suspected Eagle Pass case. Children with parent consent can receive DPT, DTP, MMR, and measles vaccines, and adults may be immunized as well.
Val Verde County Commissioners Court deferred discussion of the 1977-78 county budget to Tuesday July 6 after a special joint session. An anti recession fund balance of 32521 was allocated 16000 for Road and Bridge equipment and 16521 for Farm-to-Market Road materials. The court also authorized advertising for three crew cab pickups and set hearings for larger taxpayers.
