Work plans for the San Felipe Creek flood control project are completed and a preliminary draft is ready for study by sponsors City of El Rio Va Verde County and the Soil Conservation Service. A joint Planning party meeting is planned for July 27 at 3 p.m. with land rights easements and nine copies of landowner documents prepared by the SCS in Del Rio.

Death rites planned for Sgt Pena in Del Rio area
Full military honors will be paid to First Sergeant Earnest F. Pena 42 at a graveside service in Oak Lawn Memorial Park on Highway 90 East of Del Rio Monday. Pena died in Panama from injuries in a June 20 car crash. He arrived from Panama Friday at San Antonio International Airport and was taken to Brackettville. Memorials suggested: donations to Brackett School or La San Felipe High School libraries.

Services Held in San Angelo for Mrs. Kirby
Rites for Mrs. William J. Kirby of San Angelo formerly of Quemado were held in San Angelo June 13. Mrs. Kirby had been in failing health for years. She and her husband lived in Quemado and later at the Basle Pass Hydro Plant while he worked for Central Power and Light Co until retirement in 1967.

Funeral Rites For B A Davis Held at Big Lake
Last rites were conducted for B A Davis age 67 in Big Lake United Methodist Church on June 13 following a lingering illness. He died June 11 in Big Lake and was buried in Brady. Attending were Mrs. Jack Turney, Mrs. Cliff Lowry, and their children Elizabeth and Paul Turney.

The Texas State Fire Marshal’s and Firemen’s Association Ladies Auxiliary met in San Antonio last week naming Mrs. W E Zorn of Del Rio chaplain. Past presidents E V Easterling and Zorn from Del Rio were honored. Garland Fulbright San Antonio was named president with Mike Perez Laredo fourth vice president. the meeting included a memorial for 129 fallen firemen and notes on 1971–72 meeting sites in Dallas Galveston and Austin offices.

Charged Youth Put In Council's Custody
In Waxahachie AP report Ernest Guzman a 15 year old charged in the murder of Del Rio highway patrolman Travis Lasker was remanded to the Texas Youth Council until age 21. Judge Bruce Allen ordered confinement under the merit system with possibility of good conduct credits. Guzman’s parents attended. Also jailed were Amadeo Guerra Jr 16 who received 25 year term for murder with malice and Felipe Orta 18 who got five years for murder without malice after testifying to prevent the shooting. The patrolman was shot with his own pistol north of Waxahachie after stopping a car carrying the youths and two hitchhiking soldiers from Fort Hood who were not charged.

Val Verde Cancer Unit Awards At District Five Meet
The Val Verde County unit of the American Cancer Society received two awards at District Five’s annual Fredericksburg meeting for schools and college audiences and for total program audiences. Five delegates from Del Rio attended, led by Mrs. W G London Jr. The event opened with general assembly followed by luncheon speaker Dr H J Sannan of Denver. Approximately 75 attended the luncheon where Sannan, area vice president for medical affairs, outlined cancer research efforts. District Five covers twenty two counties with county organizations called units.

Acuna Region Six Fair Slated For July 3 Start
Mayor Jorge Cano Loperana announced Ciudad Acuna will open the Region Six Fair on July 3, running 10 days at Braulio Fernandez Aguirre Park. The event features Moon Project by NASA, Africa in Acuna exhibits, horse racing, rooster fights, and street food stalls, with youth rides and a carnival atmosphere. The Municipal Athletic Union suspended its game schedule until July 15 to accommodate preparations.
