The Eastern Air Lines and Pan American strike actions disrupt service across the U S and Puerto Rico with thousands stranded. Federal mediators and Labor Department officials push for settlement while court orders restrain further strikes through next week.
A suitcase of new one dollar bills and boxes of coins were found in the clothes closet of Clarence C. Braden, a former civil engineering professor and Jefferson mayor. Investigators estimate the stash at 40 000 to 150 000 dollars. Braden died last Thursday and left no will. relatives and cousins survive. The coins were being counted at First National Bank of Jefferson after being hauled there by a flatbed truck. Braden had long lived in East Texas after retiring from Texas A&M and Southern Methodist University and supported deserv ing boys and girls.
Secretary of State Rusk and British Foreign Secretary Home held talks to align U S and British policies on Europe Asia and Africa as Western powers sent notes to Moscow urging early Berlin talks. They urged a Four-Power approach to curb incidents along the Berlin wall and avert further East West tensions.
Sheriff Owen Kilday urged Attorney General Kennedy to dispatch federal agents to stop juvenile gang shootings in San Antonio and Bexar County. Henry Gomez, 14, was killed while swimming in a creek. attackers questioned if he belonged to a gang before firing. Police conducted mass searches of cars and arrested 38 youths on weapons and related charges.
ALEXANDER NY AP Harold Merle 23 who quit school six years ago and then returned to finish spoke at Alexander Central School commencement advising classmates not to quit. Married with two children he plans to study electronics after earning his diploma while working part time as a mechanic to support his family.
The Supreme Court ruled 6-1 that a 22 word daily prayer in New York public schools violates the U S Constitution. The Regents prayer used in opening exercises was deemed inconsistent with the establishment clause. Justice Stewart dissented calling the ruling an improper restraint of prayer. Justices Frankfurter and White did not participate.
Formosa report says Chinese Communists massing forces opposite Quemoy and Matsu as 7th Fleet reinforces for Formosa patrol. US ships moved from Yokosuka to heighten presence in the Formosa Strait. Nationalist ministry claims 400,000 Reds, 300 planes, 408 small craft, and 30 submarines on the invasion front with heightened vigilance.
In Vientiane Laos AP reports pro Communist Information Minister Phoumi Vongvichit condemned American troop landings in Thailand as a threat to peace and neutrality of Laos. He spoke after Premier Souvanna Phouma shifted leadership to his Red leaning half brother, stating the government protests the troop presence.
An unidentified man was reported in good condition at Del Rin Hospital after being struck by a car in the 1160 block of Las Vacas Sunday evening. Driver FW Garrett of Hamlin was charged with driving without a license. A separate hit and run occurred Saturday night when Lonnie William Zuchike rammed a parked 1955 Chevrolet on Eighth Street. he was arrested 15 minutes later and charged with leaving the scene and negligent collision.
The Supreme Court, in a 6-2 decision, struck down a California law making narcotics addiction a crime. Justice Stewart wrote the opinion, ruling that imprisoning an addicted person who has not used drugs within the state constitutes cruel and unusual punishment under the 14th Amendment. Justice White and Justice Clark dissented. The case stemmed from Lawrence Robinson of Los Angeles, convicted under the statute with penalties up to a year in jail and possible probation.

AP reports wiretapping expands the Billie Sol Estes case. Telephones of two Estes lawyers, John Cofer and John Dennison, were tapped and a plan to record creditors meetings with hidden microphones was discussed. A West Texas associate funded the effort but declined comment. Ralph Yarborough noted Estes invoked calls to his offices in 18 months.

Merchants may sponsor more Miss Del Rio entrants. girls 15+ may register with Mrs Ima Jo Fleetwood at the Del Rio News Herald. The pageant funds the Little League. trophies awarded for Miss Del Rio and runners-up.
