In Oakland on June 24 negotiators sought to end a two week transit strike that has halted half a million riders in the East Bay. The Key System offered 1.30 an hour while the AFL Carmen’s Union asked 1.32, down from 1.56, as a joint executive board meeting nears. The union did not endorse the offer but said discussion would continue.
Brig. Gen. Bob Mowland announced the Army Air Transport Corps will extend the Flying Tiger Line contract until July 1, 1949. The airline will operate using 54 planes with four round trips daily between Fairfield, California and Hickman Hawaii and two round trips daily between Hickman and Tokyo.
John Niklibore 52 national secretary of the Polish Roman Catholic Union collapsed and died of heart disease in Chicago. Surviving are widow Marie and a daughter Mary Jane. Niklibore had been a Union member since 1911 and national secretary since November.
John 8. Kelly of Kansas City was elected governor of District 10 of Optimist International at a Denver meeting ahead of the national convention. Also named were Palmer Black of Cheyenne, Paul Haberlan of Lincoln, Lance Heutenacht, Don Frazier of Kansas City, and secretary-treasurer Bob Iron of Batmans City. District 10 covers Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Eastern Missouri.
