Sul Ross State College in Alpine reports 1 143 students enrolled for the first six weeks of summer classes. Glen Davis says the figure is an all time summer-session high. Registration for the second six weeks begins July 15.
Defense Secretary Clark M. Clifford issued an order forbidding armed forces members from signing leases in housing areas that practice racial discrimination. The rule takes effect July 31 and follows a Supreme Court ruling on a 1866 anti discrimination law. Off base housing referral offices remain in place to assist personnel. Clifford also commented on Vietnam talks, noting increased Communist efforts but maintained hope for progress beyond propaganda.
After 18 months of debate Congress moves toward a 10 percent surtax on individual and corporate taxes in exchange for roughly 6 billion in federal spending cuts. The measure, retroactive to January 1, would raise about 15.5 billion in revenue and expire by July 1, 1969, with a House vote 268 to 150 and Johnson urging support.
David Lillis, a 10 year old from Laughlin AFB Texas, found a missing check on base grounds and sends it to the rightful owners. He notes a hot summer and asks about a Del Rio July 4 band.
Washington based report says the Poor People Campaign shifts to a more aggressive phase of civil disobedience after a major solidarity day. Authorities arrest at least 77 marchers near the Agriculture Department as tear gas and clubs are used on the outskirts of Resurrection City.
Del Rio and vicinity report clear to partly cloudy and warm with a low tonight in the low 70s and a Saturday high in the mid 90s. Southeast winds 5 to 15 mph. Thursday high 93 and low 70. morning temperature 70 with relative humidity at noon 52 percent.
Rites for Sgt. Thomas R. Cores II 24 son of Laughlin AFB officers will be held June 24 at 9 15 a m at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home New Braunfels with burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery San Antonio. Cores was killed in action in Vietnam near Quang Nam after 11 months in country. Escort will accompany remains from Alaska where brother John S. Cores serves in the U S Army. Survivors include his parents and brother plus maternal grandparents. Memorial gifts suggested to Middletown Christian School Association.
Herman W. Sparks 65 died at a local hospital. Rites scheduled 5 p.m. Saturday at Doran Chapel with Westlawn Cemetery burial under Doran Funeral Home. Born March 3 1903 in Sonora Texas he moved to Del Rio in 1905. Survived by widow Rebecca Parker Sparks a Del Rio resident, brother H A Sparks of Cleveland Ohio, half brothers Walton Tarver Fresno California and J L T Grand Prairie Texas, an aunt Mrs E A Gulick.
Possible recreational activities for the city's youth will be presented at 7 30 tonight in the Del Rio Civic Center as part of the city's recreation program. Mayor Alfredo Gutierrez set up a recreation committee headed by Police Chief J R Koog and Mike Fernandez. Sub committees will plan arts crafts swimming fishing gun care playgrounds dances arts and tours with local music and motion pictures.
Gonzalo Diaz of 110 La Grande reported to police that two spare tires and wheels were stolen from his pickup while it was parked at Hicks-Ponder Parkling lot.
Saigon endured the heaviest Viet Cong rocket shelling in nine days with 122mm and 107mm rockets hitting residential areas and at Tan Son Nhut Airbase. Six people were killed including three refugee children and 20 were wounded. A battalion including women in uniform briefly seized Bao Luc village north of Saigon, while clashes near Long Khanh and a bridge on Highway 20 caused heavy casualties. U S B52s bombed targets in a large night campaign and North Vietnam panhandle supply lines were hit in 129 missions. The attack drew condemnation as barbarism from the U N Secretary General.
In Austin the legislature favored a general 1 cent sales tax increase and adjournment by July 3. The House backed the tax shift 91 56, boosting the total levy to four cents in cities with local taxes. The $124 million measure goes to the Senate, with liquor by the drink and other bills pending.
Chief Justice Earl Warren, age 77, resigned from the U S Supreme Court sending a letter to President Johnson as the court closed its 1967 68 term. White House offered no comment and Warren’s office confirmed the resignation.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk said there were bits of progress in the Paris talks on Vietnam but urged Communist deescalation in South Vietnam. He criticized North Vietnamese infiltration and warned Hanoi that the world expects action. He announced a nuclear weapons spread stop accord to be signed July 1 in Washington Moscow and London.
Police investigate the theft of four hubcaps from a car owned by Peter R at an address on Big Street. No suspects or exact time stated. Local crime note records a minor vehicle accessory theft in progress.
