A Texas study predicts 15 to 20 percent of U S hospitals may close in the 1990s and beyond as ownership consolidates under not for profit, for profit, or third party payors. It notes business pressure could drive hospitals to own facilities and self fund plans, while rural areas attract specialists to counter urban competition. Val Verde Memorial Hospital stands comparatively strong in the rural Texas set, among 270 rural hospitals serving about three million people.

Ralph Castillo injured in a one vehicle rollover six miles west of Comstock is recovering and walking at Methodist Hospital San Antonio. Veronica Guadiana said he would undergo more tests to determine release date after being treated at Val Verde Memorial Hospital and then transferred to San Antonio for further care.
