Kerrville AP report describes defense attorney Dan Cogdell triggering a cattle prod on his left forearm in court while Rice University professor testimony questioned the device’s harm. Prosecutors say the prod was used on the victim’s genitals and tongue during an alleged Hill Country ranch torture and kidnapping in the March 1984 death of Anthony Bates. Three men face trial on organized crime charges tied to the case.
Colleen Cooke reports local Rotarians heard Lt. Roush recount three years in Russia with his father stationed in Moscow. He contrasted Soviet life with American norms, noting abacus use, limited consumer goods, frequent vodka, and government control over products and prices. He described red square and changing of the guard and stressed viewing Soviet life as markedly different.

Allen B. Williams, 64, a Brackettville native, died after a lengthy illness Monday at Humana Metopolitan Hospital in San Antonio. Rites pending. He lived in Brackettville most of his life before moving to San Antonio. Survivors include his wife Beverly, son Kevin of San Antonio, daughter Dee Dee of Corpus Christi, his mother Mrs. Margaret Williams of San Antonio, cousins Mrs. Anson Hoover and Patricia Higgins of Del Rio, and Roland Williams of Brackettville.
Police log lists multiple thefts including bikes valued at 100 and 275 taken from yards and street corners, a 2500 dollar vehicle stolen from Dunkin Donuts, a 300 dollar car theft from Prieto's Auto, a 150 dollar record player taken from a residence, and a 525 dollar VCR removed from a home, with times spanning Friday to Sunday and locations including Strickland Street South Main Canal Streets Avenue F 2nd Street and West Wiscon sin.
