LA GRANGE June 16. Judge Fuchs examined prospective jurors on the third day of the Ross insanity trial. He questioned 12 jurors in two hours as attorneys argued to prevent further delay. The jurors faced questioning about suitability as the case dragged on.
Washington June 16 Congress completed action on a bill giving President Truman broad powers to streamline government. A compromise version passed both houses after months of wrangling. Truman said he would push ahead with reorganizing plans and hoped to link more projects to the Capital during his term.
Gov Fester J hinted the legislature may study the state and local tax structure as it juggled plans for adjournment. A bill setting a future adjournment date faced Senate debate and a possible emergency taxation measure was discussed amid talks of a special session and a study committee.
Washington June 16 Senator Hickenlooper Iowa questioned if Argonne Laboratory located the container that held the Uranium-238 test from February. He called there a substantial mystery about Mickenlooper and the Senate and urged lab officials to come forward with clarity amid conflicting reports on the container’s whereabouts.
President Truman urged quick passage of the Brannan farm plan, predicting Congress will act. He framed farm legislation as key to the Democratic platform, amid bipartisan support in Congress for a bill bypassing administration measures and existing law.
In Paris the Big Four secret ministers meeting lasted eight minutes then continued in private. Andre Vishinsky left to discuss with Western colleagues as hopes rose for a Berlin Austria truce. Officials expect a joint communique later and possible deals on Berlin and Austria despite rail strike issues lingering.
Van Horn Texas June 16 Former bus driver Alvin H Logan of Pecos Valley says he will plead innocent to aggravated assault with a motor vehicle arising from the February 2 highway crash that may have ended Ben Hogans golf career. Logan appeared at 10 am in Culberson County Court before Judge James A Terrell as a jury panel of 39 awaited. Hogan and his wife traveled to Van Horn for the trial.
Five Del Ricans were in Galveston for the annual convention of the Fireman's and Fire Marshal's Association of Texas which closed at noon Thursday. Chief Norbert King R. D. Wicheleon W. K. Zorn and Mr and Mrs D H Young were among the first to register for the convention.
The Senate approved amendments with voice votes adding Taft-Hartley like provisions to the Truman labor bill. Changes require unions and employers to bargain in good faith, guarantee free speech, and require annual financial reports. A Taft alternative keeping all TH provisions was still pending.
Texas Air National Guard planes test at Hensley Field near Dallas with spray tanks and 75 yard wide coverage, as Wichita Falls and Fort Worth urge Operations Polio. State cases rise to 94 for the week ending June 11.
Donations to the polio drive continued to arrive at City Hall on Thursday. City Secretary P. H. Gelb reported contributions including five dollars from Luke Goodman and Ben, five from Henry Seale, and sixteen dollars forty five cents from the Lions Club. Health officials urged cleanliness and emphasized the need for public cooperation.
Two persons died and two were injured in a two car crash eight miles west of Edna in Jackson County. Laverne Browning, 16, was killed instantly. Johnny Kokes, 25, died at a Victoria hospital early Thursday after the collision near Edna.
Judith Caplan may testify Friday as the defense aims to depict her as a reluctant witness in a high profile espionage case. Prosecutors indicated a delay to allow a key witness to appear, while defense attorney Archibald Palmer pressed for access to a confidential report and confronted prosecutors over witness confrontation. The federal judge ruled in favor of Palmer, allowing the report to be used to challenge Caplan’s account.
Clarence J Hawkins a 28 year old Texarkana man faces a murder charge in the stabbing death of Bonnin Shelton. Jury trial expected Thursday after testimony closed Wednesday. Hawkins mother testified he is of unsound mind. Tulsa hearing set for July 7 on potential Red River lever construction near Totex Texas.
Chicago dispatch reports a 19 year old admirer of Eddie Waitkus shot the Phillies star in his hotel room. She appeared in felony court and was ordered examined by a psychiatrist as the case proceeds. Waitkus remained hospitalized and in stable condition. The report notes the accused, Ruth Stein, confessed and described her fixation on Waitkus. In a separate Amsterdam item, communists faced heavy losses in Wednesday elections across multiple municipalities.
