Del Rio Port Nets Record 23 Pound Heroin Haul
U S Customs inspectors at Del Rio and DEA halted a multi million dollar heroin trafficking operation. A 23 pound eight ounce heroin load was found inside a gas tank of a car driven by Alfredo Ramirez of Durango Mexico. Four men were arrested including two Chicago suspects Eliazar Herrera Fernando Herrera and Gustavo Martinez Fragoso. Chicago seizure added 17 pounds and three more vehicles and about 97000 dollars in cash were seized. Authorities say the heroin may originate from Durango area labs and that the case is among the largest cross border drug investigations. Continuous inquiry into related arrests continues in Del Rio and Chicago.

Officials Call Off Drowning Victim Search in Ciudad Acuna
Officials in Ciudad Acuna Mexico have called off the search for a young Mexican national who drowned in the Rio Grande Friday afternoon. A police spokesman said water releases at Amistad Dam were increased then reduced, ending efforts as of Sunday. The victim’s identity was not established and officials speculated he was not a local resident and may have tried to enter the United States illegally.

Former Justice Clark Succumbs in New York
Washington AP report says former Supreme Court Justice Tom C. Clark died in his sleep at age 77 in New York City. Clark, who served 18 years on the court after a Truman appointment, was visiting to assist an appellate court hearing and was not at home when he died. Mrs M H Wagner and son Byrd Wagner led a Del Rio group at a Sherwood area homecoming in Irion County. Joining were Mrs J Moon and her daughter Sheri Lynn, Kim Riley, another Wagner daughter Mrs Larry Joyce of Big Lake and her daughter Melissa. After a noon Saturday reunion the Del Rio group spent the weekend in Big Lake with Mr and Mrs Joyce, returning Sunday.
