Local Scouts Learn Rules of the Road Rodeo
Forty-one Cub Scouts from the Amistad District took part in a bicycle rodeo on June 4 to learn bicycle safety driving rules traffic signs and road rules. Amistad Bicycle Club members and Constable Charles Robertson demonstrated maintenance inspection and safe riding practices. Each scout earned a participation certificate and safety items.

Maverick County Judge Arrested in Record Tampering Case
Maverick County Judge Enriqueta Diaz Carpenter was arrested Thursday and released Friday on a personal recognizance bond after a sealed two count indictment accusing her of taking a box of criminal case files. Texas Ranger Johnny Allen said the files vanished from the courtroom and were found later under a office sink. The indictment concerns two cases Carpenter dismissed after the disappearance. No arraignment date is set.

Amistad NRA names William Laitner new superintendent
William G. Laitner, a 21 year National Park Service veteran, is named to lead Amistad National Recreation Area in Texas. He comes from Everglades National Park where he led interpretation and visitor services since 1991. He succeeds Robert C. Reyes who retired after 30 years in federal service. Laitner will assume duties June 12 and has a long career at parks from Rocky Mountain to Yellowstone. He holds a BS in biological science from Colorado State University and is married to Patricia Ann Woods. they have a daughter Tory.
