City Council authorizes lawsuits against Lo-Vaca and Lowe Estate

A Del Rio family hosts five orphaned baby skunks found after a mother skunk was killed by a family’s dogs. The ten day old kits, with nursing bottles, mingle with the Reed’s dogs on the porch as locals note skunks can be kept as pets once deodorized. The Reed family plans to defrost and nurture the young skunks later that day.

Kindergarten Can Take More Pupils in Lamar Summer
Lamar summer classes for Kindergarten and Pre K under Title 1 still have openings for four and five year olds. Director Alay Musquiz said at noon Thursday that some first graders may be enrolled if they report immediately. Classes run five more weeks from 9 to 12 on weekday mornings. First come first served, Musquiz urged.

Yeggs and punks worked Del Rio through Wednesday, breaking into two Shell stations, stealing cash, taking a radio antenna, and ripping a front door from a house under construction. Deadline Set for LaVaca rate decision in Texas
The Texas Railroad Commission unanimously extended by 30 days the deadline for LaVaca customers in Austin San Antonio Corpus Christi and Lower Colorado Authority to choose whether to revert to 1962 contract prices or pay current rates. Extension motions were filed by eleven towns including Austin which urged timely action as LaVaca faces a $1.4 billion lawsuit and possible bankruptcy could push rate increases. Major utility supporters favor allowing LaVaca to pass 45 percent of gas costs with a 2 percent profit, potentially setting the price around 1.75 per thousand cubic feet, far from the $1.80-2.00 level under prior orders.

Special to the News Herald reports Texas A&M University will run one of the state’s few archaeological field schools at College Station and West Texas July through August. Dr Bruce Dickson says students will excavate, reconnoiter, and study field journals with classwork. a Del Rio cave under study by researchers will be visited. The cave holds evidence of nomadic peoples up to 8000 years old. Six hours credit, harsh living conditions, tents and no running water, plus required medical checks due to tough terrain. Dickson has been preparing daily schedules for enrollees.
