President Reagan survived a Senate override attempt to block a 265 million package of Sidewinder and Harpoon missiles for Saudi Arabia after dropping Stinger missiles. The 66 34 vote fell one vote short of the two thirds needed to override, with eight senators switching to Reagan and four previously absent returning to support him.
Odessa officials warn that oil workers losing jobs after the January slump will exhaust 26 week unemployment benefits by late June or mid July. Texas Employment Commission manager Ron Norris notes claimant totals rose to 3 145 in April with continued filings growing monthly. After benefits end, job seekers face limited options such as food stamps as they seek new work.

graveside rites for Willie Schiller Gillis 87 were held at 4 p.m. at Westlawn Cemetery with Rev Ed Bush officiating burial under Humphreys Doran Funeral Home direction. Mrs Gillis died Thursday morning at 308 E Garfield Ave born Sept 8 1898 in Oker Texas married to Roger Gillis in Del Rio March 10 1920 survived by son Walter Gillis daughter Dorothy Gurley Cauthorn brother J R Schiller grandsons Robert Gillis Robert Gillis Gurley granddaughters Nancy Gillis Sobeck Patricia Gillis Hill Susan Gurley McBee five great grandsons and two great granddaughters.
