Cloudburst Damages Farms Near Peres in Pecos County

A Texas cloudburst near Peres roots farm families, lashed Highway 80 and damaged cotton and cantaloupe at the Peres irrigation district. Rain totals ranged from half to more than one and a half inches with floodwaters affecting the north side of the Pacific railroad line and two homes under construction soaked. Eighteen to twenty eight farms were damaged, with hail partly contributing. Temperatures statewide mostly in the 80s. El Paso 99, Salt Flat 94.

Rites for Lieutenant Toetry Matlarner in Breckenville

Funeral services for Lieutenant Toetry Matlarner will be held Sunday at Arenes Epiphenpa Church with Rev J Presey Pound officiating. Burial will be in Brackettville under Doran Panera Home direction. The body arrived in Del Rin Saturday and was transported by a Doren hearse to Breckenville. Lieutenant Hyberger was shot down over Germany July 7, 1945 at age 34. He served with the 61st Squadron, 4th Bombardment Group, based in England, and received the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters. He graduated from the high school of Merchaville and attended the University of Tenn.

Death by heart attack after failed hanging attempt

Harris County deputy sheriff H. W. Spence, 66, died Saturday in Houston after an attempted hanging with two wire coat hangers. An inquest found no evidence of foul play. Spence had served 27 years as a peace officer in Henderson and Harris counties. Survivors include two brothers, with funeral services planned for Monday in Raytown.

Ministers Making Progress In Berlin Talks

Paris June 44 Four weary foreym ministers broke up Saturday after a four and a half hour secret session on proposing steps toward lifting Berlin tensions. Acheson and Vishinsky held a post meeting huddle, while Schuman traveled to Lorraine to speak Sunday. The communique said the ministers continued in closed session to discuss U S and USSR proposals on Berlin with a June 6 meeting planned.

Fight on polio aided by contributions

Contributions to buy materials for Del Rin’s fogging machine to combat infantile paralysis were reported Saturday by city secretary F. H. Gelb. The city sprays alleys and streets to curb polio while urging residents to remove debris and breeding places for mosquitoes. Victor Kay Seeks Recovery After Weekend Accident

Victor Kay, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. May, sustained a leg injury when his scooter and car collided. He remained in a local hospital Saturday with his left leg placed in a cast after periods of consciousness, but was reported much better and doing well.

Del Rio Linotype School Opens Monday Classes

Six Die In Head On Collision Near Houston

A Friday night head on crash on the Bryan Houston highway near Waller Texas killed six people including four members of the Balyeat and Coppinger families and injured two others. Survivors include E L Reid Jr and John Thomas Balyeat who were reported in critical condition. Authorities recovered bonds at the scene and prepared an inquest into accidental death.

ATLANTA June 4 14 A 45 year old woman remained alive today sixteen days after eighty five percent of her body was burned in a gasoline explosion at Georgia Baptist Hospital Mrs Gyros of McCaysville was severely burned and near death after a cleaning incident May 19 when the cleaner exploded in her home

Four Year Old Boy Succumbs in San Angelo

SAN ANGELO Tex June 4 A four year old Latin American boy whose home was in San Angelo died a few hours after admission to hospital amid a polio outbreak. The city stepped up efforts to clean and cut breeding grounds for flies and mosquitoes. Five other local children were reported ill with polio and treated at area hospitals. The city commission ordered extra spraying from the air with insecticides and civic groups aided in outdoor spray programs. Churches and theaters were closed by the order. schools and night clubs also affected as health officials work to contain the epidemic.

Guards Break Up Escape Bid At Darrington Prison Park

At Angleton Texas on Saturday Privil guards halted an escape attempt by six inmates at Darrington Prison Park before they fled 200 yards. A crude hacksaw blade was used as a tool and five were rounded up near Pudley. the sixth captured near the warden’s home. Inmates named include Eugene Paul Hava 22 from Potter County serving time for theft. William Howard Graham 22 for burglary from Dewey Sauls and Palmer County. Harold Thetis Walton 21 serving three years from Gregg County for felony theft. Thelmasai Thamypsai 28 from Gregg County for stealing. One Killed, Three Hurt In Car Accident

A wreck on Highway 82 near Woodrow ten miles south of Lubbock left Reber F Brewer dead and three others injured. Jessie Bumpass owner of a Lubbock limb who rode in the car was critically hurt. two Negro passengers suffered minor injuries while the group was returning from Big Spring boxing events. Walter Copley was fatally injured at Lupkin when a dragline touched a power line and he died shortly after at a hospital.
