Del Rio Sector faces staffing and funding woes as May alien apprehensions fall 36 percent from May 1979. Deputy Chief Jack Richardson cites gasoline budget cuts, manpower shortages, and 1980 census restrictions as key factors. Gasoline funding has only partially eased, but shortages remain critical.

Six new U S Border Patrol agent trainees depart Del Rio for a 16 week training course at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glyndon Georgia. Deputy Chief Jack Richardson says the five men and one woman start Friday and are due back in Del Rio around October first. One recruit is David Hullum, son of Mr and Mrs John P Hullum of Del Rio.
Del Rio Mayor Herb Whitis appointed Garry Kyle as special investigator to examine reports of about 1 million dollars in funding for the airport modernization. County and city officials debate grant status, contingent conditions, and potential local liabilities while FAA and TAC officials confirm ongoing support and possible grant amendments.
Del Rio Texas May 1979 to May 1980 local job placements dipped slightly while out-of-town placements jumped nearly 46 percent. Local jobs fell from 95 to 68. out-of-town rose from 196 to 286. New work applications totaled 521 up from 419. unemployment claims rose to 132 from 114. TEC Director Budie Smith says the recession is not evident in Del Rio as 20 to 25 work orders remain to be filled.

Del Rio Ciudad Acuna toll bridge saw 239,149 crossings in May 1980, up from 214,087 a year earlier. Bus crossings fell to 11,791 from 12,533, while private vehicles increased to 111,941 passenger crossings and 578 trucks, with pedestrians down from 6,606 to 6,530.
Del Rio High School counselor Frank Zuniga announces two summer sessions from June 9 to July 11 with classes in language arts social studies math science and health. Tuition 50 per one semester or 90 for two, minimum 15 students, no excused absences, report cards issued end of each semester, refunds if class canceled.
The American G I Forum meets at the Forum Building at 8 p.m. to elect delegates for the State Convention in Fort Worth June 18 to 22. Roy Flores reports on last week's fundraising, and grand prize winners Ferdy Calderon Jr. and Azure Calderon were announced at the May 24 dinner.
The Texas Health Facilities Commission hears an application from Jeth Systems Inc of Del Rio to open an outpatient clinic with five exam rooms a treatment room and shared facilities at 910 address to serve Val Verde residents. The proposed clinic would provide primary care for adolescents and adults plus nutrition outreach lab pharmacy and transport services. A meeting is set Friday at THFC offices 1600 W 38th St.
