May 1970 Building Permits Surge to Over 1 Million

May 1970 building permits rose sharply for Rio, totaling $312,797 and lifting the year to date past $1 million with 1,177,255 through May. Residential permits dominated with 13 of 13 for homes, plus one commercial for Casa-Milagro Motel Corp.. new construction led at $270,432, while additions reached $15,265 and repairs/fences $27,100.

Junior Rodeo Opens Tonight At Val Verde County Fairgrounds

The Val Verde County 4 H Junior Rodeo kicks off a four day event at the fairgrounds with 21 events tonight and 12 more after. A record 197 entries from Texas Oklahoma and New Mexico compete as an extra day was added to accommodate contestants. The show begins at 8 PM with Grand Entry and Officials introduction and runs into Sunday matinee at 2 PM.

Val Verde County Library was selected to receive 134 Spanish language books and an encyclopedia under the Library Services and Construction Act. The grant, administered by the Texas State Library, funds placement due to the library’s active program for Mexican-American patrons.

Amistad Elevation and Water Metrics Dip From Wednesday

Amistad elevation this morning stood at 1057.30 feet, down 61 from Wednesday. Water depth at Amistad Bam registered 157.30 feet, a 61 drop, with storage at 23 169 acres down 328. Outbreak of Screwworms Hits Texas Panhandle and Border Areas

Three new screwworm cases confirmed in Brackett, Rocksprings, and Barksdale near Del Rio, with a case in Kinney and another in Hidalgo County. Dr. James E. Drive to curb Hanoi buildup as Marines push northwest Vietnam

Texas Senate approves liquor tax and primary financing bill

Texas senators passed a 10 percent liquor tax on drinks at public spots and private clubs and approved a primary election financing measure 23 to 8. The tax is expected to raise about 32 million dollars over two years while a single primary system remains in place for both parties.

Del Rio Boys Club Sets Summer Recreation Program

The City of Del Rio Boys Club launches a summer program for boys aged 11 to 18 at Cody ardian Gym on the Del Rio Junior High campus at 6 30 p m Monday. Activities run five evenings weekly including archery judo weightlifting handball volleyball and basketball. Doctors will give pre program checkups as forms are sent home for parent signatures. A radio Marathon on June 19 will raise funds for the club and Bob Gazaille Operation White House trip for boys.

Wind Warnings Fly at Amistad Amid Severe Texas Storms

The weather service reported southeast winds 12 to 25 mph with gusts at Amistad and showers in the area. Tornado sighting five miles south of Pyote in West Texas dissipated, while West Texas dust storms triggered watches for 55 counties. Central Panhandle hail large as golf balls accompanied 104 degree heat in Cotulla and high temperatures across the state.
