In Clemson South Carolina a violent explosion at the J P Stevens Co textile plant killed three workers and injured about a dozen others. Coroner Raymond Williams said the fatalities are confirmed and identified the three dead as Edward W Whitman George Matthis and Samuel Cobb all of Seneca. Fire crews controlled the blaze hours after the 4 0 am EDT blast and investigators noted glass injuries and a possible cause on a printing machine in the center of the printing and finishing department. An electrician had been working on the machine shortly before the explosion.
SAN ANGELO Spl General Telephone Co of the Southwest reports its three year wage and benefits proposal of May 29 rejected by the Communications Workers of America. The union countered with raises up to 85 cents per hour for maintenance and 58 cents for operators, both above Bell settlements. Company offers max 73 and 41 cents respectively. Union leaders claim the company across the board offer is the largest in company history and vows to hold all union items. Talks continued five weeks with no gains in positions since May 20.
The Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional the automatic exclusion of jurors who oppose the death penalty in murder and capital cases, in a decision tied to the Witherspoon case from Illinois. Five justices supported the majority. dissents were filed by Black, Harlan, and White, with Douglas not labeling his view an outright dissent. The ruling did not overturn the guilty verdict in Witherspoon, citing no clear juror unrepresentativeness. The court also granted a hearing for Dick Gregory on a disorderly conduct appeal from a 1965 protest.
L F Sherman of the International Boundary and Water Commission reported a record 648 cars visited the Amistad Dam observation point. About 16 percent carried out of state plates as visitors watched the water pool behind the dam, roughly 20 feet deep, forming since four gates were closed Friday afternoon.
Grand jury for Val Verde County meets again at 2 p m to continue investigations. Impaneled by Judge Roger Thurmond in 63rd District Court, the panel began work immediately. A dedicatory service for the Pecos Travel Trail was held Sunday at the Holiday Inn after rain washed out Saturday plans at Amistad Dam. The caravan traveled through Langtry, Sanderson, Fort Stockton and Monahans with 40 officials and dignitaries in attendance. Amistad Dam hosted a Saturday gathering that waited two hours for a caravan from Alamo Village and Fort Clark before regrouping on Sunday in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico.
A Spanish trawler rescued 39 crewmen from the Senegalese freighter Fer lo after a propeller broke free and gashed the hull. One man reportedly drowned during the incident near Casablanca Morocco, with the ship abandoned.

UPI reports customs inspectors seized tons of used clothing smuggled into Mexico for sale as new clothing in Ciudad Obregon Guaymas Hermosillo Los Mochis and Culiacan. Inspectors said used clothing imported is assessed the same duties as new clothing under customs rules.
A U S helicopter gunship rocket hit a Saigon command post inflaming a deadly blast that killed seven Saigon officials loyal to Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky and wounded many including Saigon Mayor Van Van Cua. The incident followed a broader Viet Cong assault across Cholon with continued air operations and sporadic rocket attacks.
