Kinney County voters flocked to the district clerk's office for the June 7 runoff with 116 walk-ins and about 15 ballots reported. Delores Rainey, district and county clerk, cited strong turnout but noted many residents will be away for summer vacations.
Absentee voting ends Tuesday for Saturday Democratic primary runoff in Val Verde County. Three state judicial races appear on the ballot. Voting is at the county clerk office and precincts vote at a single polling place. June 7 selects sheriff and three judge positions. Precincts allocate polling locations and hours run 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The U S Fish and Wildlife Service announced a June 12 public meeting in Del Rio to discuss proposing critical habitat for the Devil's River minnow and adding it to the threatened species list. Citizens can weigh pros and cons of the long running proposals affecting local flood control plans tied to the riverine fish.
Horacio Castillo of Del Rio has been promoted to foreman of the district special construction section for the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation. The district engineer Nino Gutierrez announced the promotion. Castillo has 21 years with the department and began the new duties June 1.
Vancouver AP reports the final official search for Mount St Helens eruption victims or survivors ends after two weekends of effort. Four helicopters ferried searchers and dogs to ash blanketed areas near the volcano with 30 minute ground time amid foul weather as authorities discuss next steps. Nearby, proposals and details about critical habitat for the Devil's River minnow are described, including designated areas and legal implications for federal activity and private land. A June 12 meeting at the Del Rio Civic Center is set for 7 p.m.
A summer fashion show at Plaza del Sol Mall Kalino features 15 models in swimsuits tennis wear and dresses with Mike Rodriguez as MC tonight at 730 open to the public. Evening events include Catholic Daughters of the Americas reception and Mass at Court St. Joan of Arc with a box lunch picnic.

The Del Rio Chamber of Commerce will introduce new members at a Wednesday noon orientation at San Felipe Country Club. Don Morgan, chairman of the membership drive, said new members will learn chamber operations and receive duty descriptions from committee chairmen. Morgan noted a very successful drive and that the number of new members will be announced at the meeting. Team members include Garry Kyle, the new executive vice-president and general manager, and Chester Rutigliano.
