Peru faces widespread ruin as a massive earthquake collapses towns and infrastructure. Officials fear hundreds killed while many residents search for missing loved ones amid aftershocks and continuing relief efforts. International aid groups mobilize to assist affected regions including Lima and coastal communities.
Weather data shows May rainfall 2.85 inches, above normal, with average May high 86.2 and low 61.3. Across Peru, a 7.7 magnitude quake near Chimbote caused multiple deaths, widespread damage, and aftershocks, with Trujillo and Chiclayo reporting fatalities and collapsed structures.
Distinguished Service Awards were presented to Mrs. John M. Jones Jr. and Joe de la Garza at the Del Rio Junior Chamber of Commerce banquet in La Macarena Restaurant Ciudad Acuni Mex. Both residents were cited for leadership in restoring and beautifying Brown Plaza and for mobilizing volunteers.
Heavy absentee voting reported by Val Verde County Clerk for the runoff between Dixie Connolly and Delia Gonsalez for District Clerk. Clerk Alicemae Fitzpatrick says 84 absentee ballots cast so far and expects a final rush before Tuesday afternoon close.
Special agents of the U S Customs Service report the seizure of approximately five pounds of semi refined marijuana near here Sunday night. Three defendants were arrested in the case, and two cars allegedly used in the smuggling venture were confiscated. The names of those arrested are being withheld pending a formal hearing before U S Commissioner William P Wallace in Del Rio scheduled this afternoon.
A sharp decline in May building permits compared with May 1969 was reported from the Municipal Building. May total was 132 047 dollars, down 352 534 from 1969, with new construction at 105 734 dollars across 16 permits for additions 317 500 for 15 repairs 8833 for fences. Remaining May entries list five residences including Reggie Bolding and Varga Construction Co with sizable individual sums.

Del Rio Independent School District launches Summer Fun Open To All with recreation activities starting Wednesday and library programs beginning June 8. Claude Fest coordinates athletic activities for grades 1 through 8, with registration at Garfield Elementary West End for grades 1-4 and Memorial Elementary for grades 5-8. Fest urges quick signups to complete the boys baseball league for ages 10-12 and 13-14. Outdoor morning activities include baseball, softball, volleyball, tetherball, horseshoes, and football, with indoor afternoon sports.
San Felipe Independent School District faces a board meeting Tuesday at 7 50 p m in the high school library. Supt Homero C Sigala says attorney Arturo Gonzalez will speak to tax assessments. he claims district assessments vary and are excessively high. The board will discuss plans for a new high school and report on land for the Amistad elevation, plus Governor's Commission on Urban Development actions, tax assessor and federal program updates.
A new Val Verde County grand jury panel was sworn in this morning in 63rd District Court. The body, 116 called, will consider criminal cases including the theft over $50 charge against Del Rio postman Richard Easley who turned himself in after a six day manhunt involving multiple agencies. Judge George Thurmond will preside over the June term session.
