Legislature Approves State Minimum Wage in Texas

In Austin the Texas Legislature approved a state minimum wage of 81.25 an hour, effective Feb 1 1970, with planned increases to 1.40 in 1971 and a proposed 1.60 in 1972 halted by the Senate. Farm workers come under coverage. small ranch and dairy firms with few workers are largely exempt, with thresholds tied to employee counts and unemployment insurance requirements.

Teachers gain 767 dollar raise in Texas House vote

The Texas House approved an average 767 dollar annual pay raise for teachers, voting 1376 to send the measure to the governor after accepting Senate amendments. The bill funds a 10 year raise at 61.9 million dollars next fiscal year and about 392.8 million in 1971, with a statewide kindergarten system set for 1970.

Methodists Here Get New Pastor

The Rev. John W. Platt was named pastor of the First Methodist Church of Del Rio by Bishop Eugene Slater, moving from Brownsville to succeed Milton Bohmfalk who moves to El Campo. The 300 churches in the Southwest Texas Conference held their fifth annual session at the Hubert Driscoll Hotel and First Methodist Church with 500 delegates and about 3,000 participants.

Museum Benefit Home Tour Set for June 29

A June 29 benefit tour of historical sites and long established homes in the city will raise funds for Whitehead Memorial Museum. Mrs. John M. Jones Jr. chairs the county historical survey and museum committees and announced the plan on Saturday. The tour runs from 2 to 5 p.m. with tickets to be released soon, and the Del Rio High School Junior Historians will assist. Some homes will be open to visitors, others only for grounds access. the old Rivers home at 100 Hudson Drive and the old Price home at 609 Guiner Street have granted access to tour participants.
