4-H Junior Rodeo Underway Tonight in Del Rio
Tonight the 4-H junior rodeo gets underway in Del Rio after a morning parade along South Main Street with about 59 participants. Myra Bixby and Sherri Ripley led the procession, while Sherry Lee Altizer won youngest rider honors amid over 100 riders total. The grand entry starts at 8 pm as contestants compete for titles and a hand-tooled saddle, with O R Altizer arena director and County Agent Tommy Tatum noting early entries and expected additions. Barry Burk of the AJRA is expected, last year’s All-Around champion Harley Wardlaw is no longer eligible, though Benton Wardlaw will attempt to defend the title. See RODEO Page 2

John Almond Succumbs in Del Rio Ranchman Dies at 59
John Almond Jr a 59 year old ranchman and son of early Del Rio settlers died at noon today in a local hospital after long illness. Funeral services will be arranged at the Doran Funeral Home. He was the son of Mr and Mrs John Almond whose father served as sheriff and tax collector for Val Verde County. Survivors include his widow Mrs Mabel Mashison Almond a sister Mrs Bessie Selzer of San Antonio and two brothers Lyle S Almond and Joe Almond both of Del Rio.

Language Classes To Begin Monday In Two Districts
More than 20 non English speaking preschool children are expected for summer orientation in Del Rio ISD and San Felipe District. Classes run 8 am to 12 pm five days a week, beginning Monday, for 60 days in Del Rio with Garfield Elementary as the base. Teachers include Cleo Smith and four others. 101 pupils, all novices to public school, will start language readiness to aid September entry.
