More than 1,000 signatures were submitted to City Secretary Jayne Douglas by Diane Garza and Trinidad Vela seeking the recall of Councilwoman-at-Large Otila Gonzalez and Councilman Randy Pohler. Douglas will cross check signatures with the voter list, a process lasting about 10 minutes per signature, with likely no certification before the Aug. 8 council meeting.
Val Verde County Sheriff A O Wayne Jernigan is appointed to the Sheriff's Association of Texas board of directors during the annual meeting in Lubbock. SAT president Joe Hataway made the appointment. Jernigan aims to address unfunded FCC communications issues and push for a statewide communications network to link officers across agencies for disaster response. He recalls Del Rio flood and Jarrell tornado showing the need for interagency talk. The SAT is among the nation's oldest law enforcement groups, formed in 1874 to aid sheriffs in enforcing laws and protecting counties and the state.
Three weeks before classes, Del Rio Freshman School fills with boxes of new books as district staff sort shipments for kindergarten through fifth grade. Text book clerk Troy Turner and assistants Eduardo Fernandez and Emmanuel Leon work long hours handling semi truck deliveries arriving almost daily.
San Antonio officials warn water rights holders may have to curtail pumping on the San Antonio Medina and Guadalupe rivers as flow levels drop. Al Segovia of the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission issued advisory letters to 40 junior Medina River holders and 158 San Antonio River holders, with 25 Blanco River rights likely to receive warnings soon. Restrictions would be enforced by seniority, prioritizing domestic use, livestock, and longtime holders, and would be a last resort. Kerrville may be especially vulnerable due to a 1977 Guadalupe River permit of 3,000 acre-feet annually.
Executive Director Mary Rodriguez and Program Director Pete Garcia outline after school programs for ages six to 18 at the Boys & Girls Club. Activities aim to boost TAAS skills, with computer programs, tutoring, and non sports games. Last year membership reached 1817 with funding from Bingo profits and City Court Foundation support.
