Fourth of July celebrations energize Del Rio parade crowds
Del Rio marked Independence Day with a sunny parade along South Main Street and crowded gatherings at Moore Park and the Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez Amphitheatre. Mayor Alcala led dignitaries in the festivities after a ribbon cutting honoring H E B for funding the new roof. U S Rep Henry Bonilla and State Rep Pete P Gallego spoke to several hundred residents.

VVSO Receives Federal Vest Grant for Val Verde Deputies
Val Verde County will receive about 11 000 in federal grant money to buy Bulletproof vests for sheriff s deputies. U S Senator John Cornyn announced the Department of Justice grant under the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program funding 50 percent of the 24 589 75 price tag for 41 Monarch Level IIIA vests to be worn by all regular deputies. The county earlier earmarked 20 000 for vests in the 2002 2003 fiscal year. six thousand five hundred applications were submitted nationwide this year with 5 700 funded. The funds become available next month.

Patriotic homecoming for Del Rican BILL SONTAG ee
Marine Lance Corporal Cristobal Daniel Villarreal Ramos returned home to Del Rio on the Fourth of July, greeted by cheering neighbors and family. He deployed from Camp Lejeune in January, sailed aboard the USS Gunston Hall into the Persian Gulf, and completed staging at Camp Shoup before Iraq invasion plans. He is great nephew of Medal of Honor recipient Roy Benavides.
