The Del Rio News-Herald offices close on Thursday but daily paper delivery remains at normal time. Texas officials dispute federal dropout funds eligibility, and TxDOT closes several roads statewide due to flash floods effective immediately with detours in place.
A five day rainstorm left Central Texas submerged with three deaths confirmed by the Department of Public Safety. An Utopia man died on a farm tractor, another in Bandera County after driving into floodwater, and a third near Barton Springs in Austin. Lt. John Lissner of Del Rio Police disputes the police department release over a Sunday morning arrest and stolen vehicle connected to a Port of Entry crash that left U S Customs Officer Ricardo Rios seriously but stably hospitalized. He says officers misrepresented timing and actions, citing details from 2:24 and 2:53 a m calls and Avalos hiding in a truck bed before later escaping from a patrol unit.
Val Verde County Judge Mike L. Fernandez denounces errors in Del Rio city draft titled Del Rio Economic Base Analysis. County Tax Assessor Wayne Hyde disputes TIP Development Strategies figures, stating the 2001 total tax rate is 0.3970 including General Fund 0.3804 and Road Fund 0.0166, with Hospital District setting its own rate.
Del Rio prepares a July Fourth celebration with a veterans parade from Star Park through Main Street to 17th Street and a ceremony at the Civic Center renaming Avenue F to Veterans Boulevard. Events continue at the Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez Jr. Amphitheatre after the parade with local veterans recognized.
