Courthouse open house marks near completion of Val Verde restoration
After more than a year of brick by brick work the Val Verde County Courthouse restoration nears completion. An open house on Friday July 7 from 9 30 a m to noon will showcase the work with speakers including State Senator Frank Madla State Representative Pete Gallego and Texas Historical Commission official Sharon Fleming. Ray Kirkpatrick recalls the structure sat nearly 50 years with little maintenance and notes County funds of 600 000 plus 600 000 in matching state funds created a 1 2 million budget. The project avoided higher bids by using jail laborers and temporary workers, potentially trimming costs from an estimated 3 5 million.
