Shooting on Mexican side alarms Val Verde residents
Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez said four 9-1-1 calls came in about 11 p.m. Saturday reporting a shooting on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande near Vega Verde Road. Deputies and Border Patrol responded, heard gunfire, and noted stray bullets hitting carrizo along the road on the Mexican side, with no injuries or property damage on the U.S. side. The sheriff indicated the incident may have been a running gun battle between law enforcement on the opposite shores.
