School board to hear proclamation and updates at meeting
Mayor Dora G Alcala will proclaim School Board Recognition Month at tonight's meeting in the district administrative office board room. Board members will get updates on the bond project educational specifications tax office special education facilities and the superintendent's report on a proposed district organizational chart and its impact on personnel operations and instructional services. Detectives with the Del Rio Police Department investigate a sexual assault reported this weekend. Capt Efrain Favela says a 22 year old female reported being assaulted January 13 2001 at about 4 am at the 400 block of East 4th Street with two suspects. Det Phil Tomasese leads the case. No arrests have been made.

County moves jail to private firm for large savings
Val Verde County transferred jail operations to Wackenhut Corrections Corp. early Monday. The new 600 bed facility and the existing 184 beds will be managed by the private company. Auditor Frank Lowe says the shift will significantly cut costs in fiscal year 2001 and beyond, with initial savings from ceasing county insurance for 45 employees and other program reductions totaling about 1 million dollars.

CIP covers Culture and Recreation 310 000 with park improvements to be funded by future obligations or GO bonds and general government 570 000 for computing upgrades funded from operating funds. Six Texas districts cited for dropouts in university report
The study by Johns Hopkins researchers ranks a Central Texas city district alongside five others in Texas among the 14 urban districts with the worst dropout rates nationwide.
