Tommy Lynn Sells, 35, already jailed in West Virginia earlier for a similar crime, was captured in Charleston after admitting a cross country killing spree. In Del Rio, Texas, on January 2, he allegedly entered a bedroom where Kaylene Harris and Krystal Surles slept and slashed their throats. Krystal survived.
In the Texas border region only about five percent of women with healthy pregnancies took folic acid before conception, far below national usage. TDH and Cameron County health officials plan March of Dimes funded outreach to raise awareness as studies show folic acid reduces neural tube defects.
Mario Luna-Escamilla, 35, escaped from a county work crew finishing the old Val Verde County Court House. He had volunteered for the county trusty program and had been booked on burglary charges from October 27, 1999. Officials described him as a nonviolent trusted prisoner with a background check and interview prior to joining.
A 19 year old, Jesse Lee Santellanes, was shot in the arm near GI Forum Park late Thursday. He was airlifted to San Antonio. Police say a suspect was arrested and charged. Detective Eddie Cortez made the arrest. The suspect's name was not released at press time.
Alpha Hernandez presented Nueva Esperanza a self help housing plan to Del Rio City Council. Representing Familias Unidas de Val Verde County the newly formed nonprofit aims to aid flood victims with affordable homes around 25 000 dollars featuring three bedrooms one bath and central air. The project would use sweat equity and self management for low income families including flood victims and migrants.
The North of the Border Sheep Dog Trials begin in Del Rio this weekend with the Triple Crown race as the first leg. Organizer Butch Larson says handlers from across the country compete for the highest combined score to advance to the next events in Lamesa and Millsap. Larson, who breeds Border Collies on the Allen Ranch, notes that at least one handler, Richard Adam, traveled to Scotland for his dog Fly.
