The Del Rio News Herald reports candidates must declare by Monday January 3. A full list will appear in the January 5 edition. Democratic Party temporary chair Janie Ramon says the list will be available this afternoon. Republican chair Randy Sheppard and 2000 chair Gene Chapman could not be reached.

Murder suspect tied to second killing in Kentucky case
Tommy Lynn Sells, jailed in Del Rio for the Kaylene Harris murder, is also suspected in the May slaying of Haley McHone, a 13-year-old girl from Lexington. Police obtained warrants charging him with murder, rape, and kidnapping in McHone's death after a Lexington detective interviewed him.

Del Rio Officer Involved in Afternoon Shooting
Del Rio officers responded to a disturbance on Ramon Street after 12:30 p.m. Gregorio Medrano, 71, fired at Officer Hutchinson. Officer William Culpepper arrived as backup and shot Medrano, who survived with a gunshot wound to the lower right abdomen. Culpepper is on administrative leave per policy. No other injuries reported.

Men Held on Federal Drug Charges in Eagle Pass Area
A two count federal indictment names Jesus Martinez Moncivais, 23, of Eagle Pass for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. He was arrested Dec. 19 in Maverick County with more than 229 pounds of marijuana valued at 183000. Also charged is Elias Garcia-Arrellano, 40, Houston, with possession and importation of marijuana after a Dec. 12 border entry and Dec. 13 detention. A separate grand jury charged Ignacio Esquivel, 35, Sabino Velasquez, 38, and Jose Antonio Villarreal, 51, all of Eagle Pass, with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute more than 100 pounds. All defendants remain jailed. penalties range up to 40 years in prison and fines up to 2 million per count.
