In New York the Dow Jones industrial average hovered near 1,911 after a brief early rise. By 11 a.m. the Dow was up 2.01 points at 1,911.42 while gainers led losers 672 to 587 with 561 unchanged. Volume reached 39.01 million on the NYSE.

Del Rio area participants joined the Christmas Audubon National Bird Count on December 26 and 27 with start times near 7:15 a.m. at Fisherman's Headquarters. Comstock counters began at 7:16 a.m. at Seminole Canyon State Park. Alpha Chapter 243 has no meeting Thursday due to holidays, and the Del Rio Mental Health Clinic will be closed New Year’s Day with normal hours resuming Friday.
Installation of officers will be held by the Val Verde Memorial Hospital Auxiliary at the meeting Jan. 13. Officials will be sworn in Thursday at 1 30 a.m. in the Kinney County courthouse in Brackettville. The pledge of allegiance to the flag will be part of the ceremony. The auxiliary meets on the second Tuesday each month at 5 p.m. at St James Episcopal Church. The Blackwood Brothers will perform at First United Methodist Church on Monday Jan. 5 at 7 30 p.m. The Rev. Bill Hutchinson is associate pastor.
In The Hague officials from the United States and Iran ended talks without a final deal on returning nearly 508 million dollars frozen in the United States. Iran accused the U.S. of lacking good faith after a 30 minute session with no date set for resumption.
Jerome Steve Maciejewski, 66, longtime Del Rio resident and Lake Amistad marina owner, died of a heart attack. Rites pending. survivors include wife Lucille and four daughters. Manuel Leos, 80, died of a heart attack at home in Del Rio. rites Thursday at Don's Funeral Chapels with burial at Oak Lawn Memorial Park. survivors include wife Elida, son Manuel Jr., and multiple grandchildren.
Calendar notes an UCQ New Year’s Eve dance at UCO Hall 1315 King's Way with doors opening at 7 p.m. Also listed are church services at 7 p.m. by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a regular service by God's Victorious Army at 115 Cantu St.
Air Force investigators recovered more than 4000 in military hardware and uniforms from a theft ring at Lackland AFB. Base spokesman Jim Sandefur said audits are underway to determine missing gear as investigators questioned 13 suspects confronted at their jobs two weeks ago. The seized items included police flight jackets found in offices and cars.
