A brutal cold snap grips Dalhart with temperatures 22 to 26 degrees and a high near 30. Wind speeds 9 to 14 mph add to the chill while South and West Texas escape the worst of the Arctic air.
Pat Dugan and Mrs Charles Dugan left Nacogdoches for Del after visiting relatives. Peggy Ann and Dorothy Centilli, daughters of Yr and Mrs, will return to their classes at the University of Texas in Austin on January 5.
A meeting of the Val Verde Chapter of the American Cancer Society is scheduled for January 6. Officers and the executive board are set to discuss ongoing cancer awareness and community outreach efforts.
John Anderson attended the Juno dance and has now returned to his home in Dallas after the event.
Margaretan Stolfo, a Sul Ross State College student, attends the American G I Forum event at their Hamilton Lane club. The evening features dancing to live music and a highlight award of a two year old steer.
Carmen Vara is connected to the baby’s paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Clemente Ortiz Sr., both residents of Del Rio.
Brush and grass blazes prompted two alarms for the Del Rio Fire Department Monday afternoon. Fire Chief W E Zorn said both fires appeared caused by fire from fireworks and noted it is illegal to possess such fireworks. Fire Station No 3 and six volunteer plus three paid firefighters fought the blazes.
Charles Ernest Moten, 22, was chosen to serve as program coordinator for the Val Verde Community Action Agency at a board meeting Monday night. The action includes pay details up to 117.50 per week for the coordinator and up to 135 per week for on the job training positions across four counties. The board also named Miss Rodriguez secretary and Miss Rebecca Gutierrez bookkeeper for CEP programs. Moten is a San Angelo graduate and a former member of the Hood Youth Corps.
United Press International reports a critical blood shortage striking New York City and other areas. Six emergency recruiters were set up to recruit donors as hospital supplies dip. Dallas and Houston report limited stocks threatening surgeries. Chicago shows slow recovery after a Red Cross appeal and Hong Kong flu outbreaks blamed for the shortfall.
Despite occasional shortages at Blood Services in San Antonio, no local patient in need has gone without. Richard Reordan administrator of Verde Memorial Hospital noted the hospital has been able to meet its blood needs so far, though the director of Blood Services cautioned about tight supplies.
Full military rites will honor Lance Cpl. Rene J. Salazar 18 of Del Rio at a Thursday 4 p.m. Requiem Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Burial in Oak Lawn Memorial Park with graveside service by the Marines. Salazar died from wounds in Vietnam on December 19. He arrived in Del Rio from the international airport and was in state at Diaz Funeral Home chapel.
Amistad Dam held 144.76 feet of water with storage around 687,894 acre feet and water surface area about 17,136 acres. Downstream discharge was 1,060 second feet.
Del Rio servicemen send touching letters from Vietnam to the GI Forum donors. Ernest De La Rosa aboard the USS Coral Sea expresses gratitude for Christmas parcels and promises to help upon return after 14 months. Dempsey and Raul Rangel also thank the donors, noting the harsh conditions and wishes for a Merry Christmas and New Year.

Douglas McGraw said today that his group will be charged with damaging mail and interfering with delivery. The incident involved firecrackers in a nine courtesy box and a larger blast is anticipated under the case.
