Poland's PAP reports martial law will be suspended at midnight between December 30 and 31, 1982, ending the state of war imposed December 12, 1981 to curb Solidarity. Military government remains with special powers under the suspension and will continue to operate for state security.
The 3 percent excise tax on local telephone service remains in effect under a $100 billion law affecting cigarettes medical deductions airline travel and financial withholdings. Industry leaders Wagner and Wieland say the tax raises costs on customers and is regressive, with little relief for the lower income. The tax, first imposed as a temporary wartime measure, has fluctuated since World War I and was slated to expire this year before the extension.

Del Rio youth gain exposure to Laughlin Air Force Base on the second annual tour sponsored by the 85th flying training squadron and the Youth Counseling Center. Twenty six children toured the flight line, tried flight gear, rode a jet, and received model airplanes after lunch.
Recruiters target 21 to 35 year olds for Border Patrol work along the U S Mexico border amid rising alien apprehensions. Del Rio sector reports 244 authorized personnel with 53 000 aliens caught this year while El Paso notes heavy demand as border crossings surge.
Kinney County Grand Jury named Sheriff Bailey in a four count indictment on April 5 alleging he traded a meth lab for marijuana and cash and moved illicit weed for evidence while providing surveillance for a drug exchange. A May indictment accuses him of offering money to a Border Patrol agent for testimony about his investigation of DPS narcotics officers. Bailey, elected sheriff in 1980, previously served Brackettville police chief and worked as a Fort Clark Springs security guard and a U S Interior trapper in Kinney County. May include Norman Hooten succeeding term.
Dale Robert Scruton 30 former Del Rio resident died Wednesday morning at Meriden-Wallingford Hospital Meriden Conn after a six month cancer battle He lived at 152 Dexter Ave Meriden Born April 19 1952 in Rochester NH son of Raymond D and Ethel Gray Scruton now in Ludlow MA He served eight years in the USAF as a jet engine technician stationed at Laughlin AFB met his wife in Del Rio and worked in Plattsburgh NY before moving to Meriden three years ago He later worked for Pratt and Whitney Middletown He was in the East Hartford QA program at selection and belonged to Cavalry Baptist Church and the Connecticut ANG 103 CAM squadron at Bradley Field Rites Friday at 130 pm Cavalry Baptist Church Meriden burial in Crown Point Cemetery Strafford NH Monday under Flatow Funeral Home Meriden Survivors include his wife Rebecca Beal Scruton his parents a son Todd Byron and daughter Alicia Mae of Meriden his grandmother Rather Scruton of Rochester a brother Leon Raymond Scruton of Camarillo CA and a sister Terry VanRyn of Denver CO

High Wednesday hit 46, low this morning 39, and today’s all time high for Dec 36 is 86 in 1951 with an all time low of 22 recorded in 1910 and tied in 1917.
