Christmas Eve robbery in Del Rio parking lot

Del Rio police hunt three men who robbed 17 year old Joshua Hardin in the Wal Mart parking lot on December 24. He was grabbed as he walked to his car, cash amounting to 320 dollars was taken, and he escaped to a safe area before calling relatives who alerted authorities. Investigators have turned the case over to the criminal investigations division.

Garfield Elementary to Open Jan 4 with Parent Orientation

The Garfield Elementary campus will open to parents Wednesday with an orientation at 5:30 p.m. Assistant principal Eliza Diaz says staff have moved classroom items in over the past two weeks and asks parents to park on the Las Vacas side due to front entrance road work on West Martin Street.

Holiday shoppers spend a bit more this season

U S shoppers spent slightly more this holiday season with overall retail sales up 3.6 percent from November 1 to December 24 and online sales rising 15.5 percent. The gains followed a year of tight credit and high unemployment, helped by inventory planning and post Thanksgiving demand. Gift card sales remained weak as shoppers favored discounted merchandise.
